You can make these incredibly simple, buttery cookies with just three common ingredients. They bake quickly and deliver a rich, melt-in-your-mouth texture perfect for tea time or a fast dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the softened butter and sugar. Mix them together until the mixture is smooth and creamy. You can use a fork or a hand mixer for this step.
  3. Gradually add the flour to the butter and sugar mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix the dough.
  4. Roll the dough into small balls, about 1 inch in diameter, or press the dough into a piping bag fitted with a star tip if you prefer a shaped cookie.
  5. Place the dough balls or piped shapes onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 1 inch between them. You can gently press the tops with a fork to flatten them slightly if you made balls.
  6. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges are just starting to turn light golden brown.
  7. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use room temperature butter. If you chill the dough briefly before baking, the cookies will hold their shape better.
  • These are essentially a simple, buttery shortbread style cookie. They are delicious plain, but you can dip the cooled cookies in melted chocolate for an extra treat.
  • If you want a slightly crisper edge, bake for an extra minute or two, but watch carefully to prevent burning.
