Make this naturally sweetened, creamy banana oatmeal on the stovetop in under 15 minutes. It uses ripe bananas for sweetness, making it a simple and wholesome breakfast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 2 cups water or milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 2 very ripe medium bananas, mashed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon peanut butter for topping
  • Optional: Sliced banana for topping

Instructions

  1. Combine the rolled oats, water or milk, mashed bananas, cinnamon, and salt in a medium saucepan.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat.
  3. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring frequently to prevent sticking.
  4. Reduce the heat to medium-low and continue cooking for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring often, until the oatmeal thickens and reaches your desired creamy consistency. The mashed banana will dissolve and sweeten the oats.
  5. Remove from heat. Let it sit for 1 minute to set slightly.
  6. Divide the oatmeal into bowls. Top with sliced banana and peanut butter, if using.

Notes

  • Use very ripe bananas; the browner the peel, the sweeter the oatmeal will be.
  • For extra creaminess, use milk instead of water, or stir in 1 tablespoon of Greek yogurt or cream cheese after removing from heat.
  • This recipe is naturally sweetened; avoid adding extra sugar.
  • For a peanut butter banana oatmeal variation, stir 1 tablespoon of peanut butter into the oats while cooking.
