Make these flavorful Bang Bang Chicken Skewers for a quick weeknight dinner or a crowd-pleasing appetizer. You get juicy chicken coated in a creamy, spicy sauce, perfect for grilling or air frying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 10 wooden or metal skewers (if using wood, soak for 30 minutes)
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sriracha (adjust to your spice preference)
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup
  • Optional garnish: chopped green onions or sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, toss the cubed chicken with soy sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Let the chicken marinate for at least 15 minutes while you prepare the sauce.
  2. To make the creamy bang bang sauce, whisk together the mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, sriracha, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and honey in a small bowl until smooth. Set aside half of the sauce for serving later.
  3. Thread the marinated chicken pieces onto your prepared skewers, leaving a small space between each piece.
  4. Prepare for cooking: Choose your method below.
  5. **For Grilling:** Preheat your grill to medium-high heat (about 400°F). Lightly oil the grates. Brush the chicken skewers generously with half of the prepared bang bang sauce. Grill for 4-5 minutes per side, brushing with more sauce halfway through cooking, until the chicken is cooked through and has nice char marks (internal temperature reaches 165°F).
  6. **For Air Frying:** Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (195°C). Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the skewers in a single layer in the basket, ensuring they do not overlap. Brush the skewers with half of the prepared bang bang sauce. Air fry for 10-12 minutes, flipping the skewers halfway through, until the chicken is golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Remove the cooked chicken skewers from the heat. Brush them lightly with any remaining sauce from the grilling/air frying process.
  8. Serve the juicy chicken skewers immediately with the reserved half of the creamy bang bang sauce for dipping. Garnish with green onions or sesame seeds if desired.

Notes

  • For extra crispy chicken, you can lightly dredge the marinated chicken pieces in cornstarch before skewering and cooking.
  • If you want to make these ahead, marinate the chicken and prepare the sauce separately. Assemble and cook just before serving.
  • Serve these spicy chicken skewers over rice or inside lettuce cups for a complete meal.
