Prepare this make-ahead breakfast bake the night before for an easy, indulgent brunch or holiday morning meal. Flaky croissants soak in a savory egg custard with ham and cheese, ready to bake when you wake up.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 large croissants, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup diced cooked ham
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Arrange the croissant pieces evenly in the bottom of the dish.
  2. Sprinkle the diced ham and shredded cheddar cheese over the croissants.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
  4. Slowly pour the egg mixture evenly over the croissants, ham, and cheese. Gently press down on the croissants to help them absorb the liquid.
  5. Cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
  6. When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the plastic wrap.
  7. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed, golden brown on top, and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the casserole rest for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute half-and-half for some of the whole milk.
  • You can substitute cooked sausage or bacon for the ham if you prefer a different savory filling.
  • If you skip the overnight rest, let the assembled casserole sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before baking, and increase the bake time by 5-10 minutes.
