A simple and comforting old-fashioned apple crumble recipe, perfect for a quick weeknight dessert or a holiday gathering. This recipe focuses on a balanced crumble topping and the best apples for baking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium baking apples (like Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (optional, for texture)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour the apple mixture into an 8×8 inch baking dish or a similar-sized oven-safe dish.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, oats (if using), and salt.
  4. Add the cold butter cubes to the flour mixture. Use a pastry blender, your fingertips, or two forks to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the apples in the baking dish.
  6. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.
  7. Let the crumble cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  • To reheat, cover loosely with foil and warm in a 300°F (150°C) oven for 10-15 minutes.
  • This recipe can be easily doubled for a larger crowd.
  • For a crispier topping, ensure your butter is very cold.
