A simple and natural recipe for making delicious applesauce from fresh apples, perfect for using up apple season bounty.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds apples (about 68 medium), such as Fuji, Gala, or Honeycrisp
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (optional, adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Wash, peel, core, and chop the apples into 1-inch pieces.
  2. Place the chopped apples in a large pot or Dutch oven.
  3. Add the water, sugar (if using), cinnamon, and lemon juice to the pot.
  4. Stir to combine.
  5. Cover the pot and bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
  6. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20-30 minutes, or until the apples are very tender. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  7. Remove the pot from the heat.
  8. Mash the apples with a potato masher for a chunky texture, or use an immersion blender or food processor for a smoother consistency.
  9. Taste and adjust sweetness or cinnamon as needed.
  10. Let the applesauce cool completely before serving or storing.

Notes

  • For a smoother applesauce, you can strain it through a fine-mesh sieve after mashing.
  • Applesauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week, or frozen for longer storage.
  • You can add other spices like nutmeg or cloves for variation.
