Make soft, fluffy garlic naan at home with this simple stovetop recipe, perfect as a side for your favorite curry.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter, plus more for brushing
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and baking powder.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, yogurt, and melted butter to the dry ingredients. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 6-8 equal portions.
  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion into a thin oval or teardrop shape.
  8. Heat a cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
  9. Cook each naan for 1-2 minutes per side, until puffed and lightly browned in spots. You may see some bubbles form.
  10. While the naan is cooking, mix melted butter with minced garlic and chopped cilantro (if using).
  11. Brush the cooked naan with the garlic butter mixture.
  12. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of nigella seeds to the dough.
  • If you don’t have yogurt, you can substitute with milk.
  • Ensure your skillet is hot before adding the naan for the best puff.
